In a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy solutions, members of the Bohol Association of Non-Government Organizations, Inc. (BANGON), Lumina Ventures, and the Provincial Government of Bohol embarked on an insightful Renewable Energy learning visit in the Province of Iloilo from October 22-26, 2024. This initiative is part of the Advancing Sustainable Provincial Investments for Renewable Energy (ASPIRE) project, which aims to enhance and sustain renewable energy practices and efforts in the Province of Bohol.
The group comprises members of the Bohol Renewable Energy Board (BREB), Lumina Ventures, a Distribution Utility representative, and several members of BANGON, Inc. The team was graciously welcomed by local advocates, Mr. Melvin Purzuelo and Mr. Eliseo Calanza of Green Forum Panay Guimaras, Inc. who guided the team throughout the visit.

The first day featured a vital meeting at the Provincial Capitol of Iloilo, hosted by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Hon. Rolando B. Distura, a notable author of the Iloilo Local Energy Code. Together with him are Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Hon. Rolito C. Cajilig and Mr. Rey Victor P. Garin, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC) Focal Person. The discussion revolved around key components of the Iloilo Provincial Ordinance for Renewable Energy, the Iloilo Provincial Renewable Energy Plan, and the establishment of the Iloilo Energy Efficiency and Conservation Desk.
The learning exchange proved invaluable, as the group gained a wealth of insights and learned about the best practices that could seamlessly be adapted to pursue sustainable renewable energy solutions for the Province of Bohol. Engaging in discussions during the open forum fostered a sense of motivation within the group to champion renewable energy initiatives. The group then thanked the Iloilo Provincial Government for their exceptional hospitality.

The itinerary included visiting the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in the Municipality of Pototan, where Dr. Albert Cordero, Chief of Hospital, showcased the operational solar-powered systems. Discussions revolved around the benefits and future expansions of solar PV installations at the facility, demonstrating the positive impact of renewable energy on healthcare service delivery.

On the second day, the group traveled to the Municipality of Carles, welcomed by Municipal Administrator Mr. Vicente Barbosa together with Municipal Planning and Development Officer Mr. Julieto A. Manggasang and Supervising Admin Officer Mr. Guillermo Pamplona Jr. A productive dialogue ensued about the renewable projects underway in Carles, as well as challenges faced and future proposals for energy enhancement. Afterward, the group explored the Municipality’s Primary Care Facility, which was also equipped with solar-powered systems.
The visit continued to the Municipality of Concepcion, where discussions led by Engr. Henry V. Dela Cruz and Engr. Isagani D. Valderama highlighted the advantages derived from their solar installations in their Municipal Buildings.

The learning visit highlighted the array of opportunities available for the Province of Bohol to enhance its renewable energy sector. With the valuable knowledge acquired from Iloilo’s experiences, the group is poised to push for innovative renewable energy solutions that align with sustainable development goals, fostering energy efficiency and conservation across the province.
