
Bohol, August 6, 2024 — A session titled “Understanding the Bohol Energy Situation and Potential for Renewable Energy” was held at STK Diner, Tagbilaran City, bringing together experts, stakeholders, and community leaders to discuss the pressing energy challenges facing Bohol and the promising potential of renewable energy solutions. The event was facilitated by the Bohol Association of Non-Government Organizations, Inc. (BANGON).

The session commenced with opening remarks from Ms. Corazon L. Paras of IMAP-Bohol. This was followed by BIDEF Executive Director and BANGON BOT President Mr. Francis Bernard I. Batoy, who provided the rationale for the activity, emphasizing the need for collective action to transition towards greener energy sources. ASPIRE Project Manager Engr. Jerry Aguilar then gave an overview of the day’s sessions, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of Bohol’s energy landscape.
Session 1 featured a presentation by Ms. Gaynor B. Tanyang of Lumina Ventures, who examined the “Current Energy Situation in Bohol.” Ms. Tanyang highlighted the island’s heavy reliance on conventional energy sources, which poses significant risks to both environmental sustainability and energy security.
Also, esteemed speakers from Bohol Island State University (BISU) took the floor to share their pioneering research and innovative projects. Their expertise not only highlights the university’s commitment to advancing renewable energy but also underscores the critical role that academic institutions play in addressing the energy challenges faced by the province.
Session 2, Dave Pojadas, DEng, REE of Bohol Island State University (BISU) discussed “The Potential of Renewable Energy in Bohol.” Pojadas outlined the vast opportunities available in the province for harnessing renewable energy, including solar, wind, and hydropower, and advocated for greater investment in these resources to ensure a sustainable energy future for Bohol.

Session 3 provided practical insights through a series of case studies presented by experts and researchers from Bohol Island State University (BISU):
• Engr. Lanie Calabio presented on “Renewable Energy-Based Electrification for Schools in Off-grid Islands,” showcasing how renewable energy can bridge the gap in electricity access for remote educational institutions.
• Engr. Carlito S. Baco Jr. discussed the “Analysis of Adopting Microgrid Systems for Garcia Memorial Hospital,” emphasizing the role of microgrids in improving the reliability and resilience of energy supplies in critical healthcare facilities.
• Lannil Calizar and Cielo Jane Rulona introduced “Solar Island: Enhancing Bohol’s Energy Security with Floating Solar PV Systems,” an innovative project aimed at utilizing floating solar panels to bolster the province’s energy security.
• Kathlene Jane Hinay presented on “Designing a Suitable Solar PV System for Off-grid Small Islands in Danajon Bank of Tubigon, Bohol,” highlighting the tailored solutions needed for the unique energy needs of small, off-grid communities.
Finally, Rev. Bong Fostanes of IMAP-Bohol provided insights into the Bohol Renewable Energy Code during Session 4, outlining regulatory frameworks and policies that could support the province’s transition to sustainable energy sources and offering a roadmap for future energy governance in Bohol
The session concluded with a call to action, urging all stakeholders to collaborate and push forward with renewable energy initiatives that will secure a sustainable and resilient energy future for Bohol. The event not only showcased the province’s renewable energy potential but also highlighted the critical role of community involvement and academic contributions in driving this transition.
